First off, I am Canadian. Obviously purple you have other ideas about what being a Canadian is about.
Anyways Munter what I was trying to state that in most cases, ( If fear is used well enough, or if certain actions take place) They can take away your own liberty.
Though the question in some cases is can you take away something you never had?
Romans believed that if you were born a slave you could eventually become a citezen of the Romans. This extremely differs from that of Africa, where most people are not able to earn there own freedom back. Due to circumstances.
True threats you can say do not constrict liberty, but threats that are carried out can constrict liberty. Thus I come to the conclusion that liberty is not the same for all people.
Try looking at liberty as just a bonus in life, it is not a necessity for survival but it is still a good thing to have.

Re: Munter's Philosophy Corner.
new topic?
labels, do you think its right to label someone based of skin color, clothing style, accent, anything? what about good labels and bad labels? if a group labels something together is it right? does it matter if you disagree? who has the right to label? and why are labels hurtful sometimes? why do i personally get mad if someone calls me a hillbilly and looks down on me based off my heritage and upbringing?

Here's some nice little thought-provoking ones to keep you going:
Why do banks charge a fee on “insufficient funds” when they know there is not enough?
Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?
Why do they use sterilised needles for death by lethal injection?
Whose idea was it to put an “S” in the word “lisp”?
What is the speed of darkness?
If it’s true that we are here to help others, what are the others doing here?
If someone with a split personality threatens to commit suicide, is it a hostage situation?
What level of importance must a person have, before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?
When you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn?
Why is there an eject button on the VCR remote? Don't you have to get up to get to the tape?

Wow,
I think you are not seeing the distinction I'm trying to make between liberty and the value of it, but you are also hinting on this in that passage.
I was saying that fear makes people feel less free, but does not actually make them less free, I made an example of a man without a gun outside your house, he instils fear in you, threatening to kill you if you step outside the house. Nevertheless you are still free to leave the house.
In this case, and in the case of the people controlled in the most heinous of regimes, the value of that freedom is diminished greatly, due to a greater desire of a lack of pain, or the survival of yourself and the ones you love.
When a threat is carried out it can restrict liberty, but this is when it is carried out, the threat itself does not. Unless the threat is something like, "If you try to leave this room I will catch you and put you back in the room", In this case your liberty is diminished is it is carried out. But you are still free to try to leave the room.
And I'm not sure about liberty being viewed as just a bonus, people have fought and died for liberty, I think it's more important to us than a mere bonus. However, I do agree it isn't a necessity for survival, it is something that we seem to need if we are to live happy and fulfilled lives. By in large.
Nice topic start Gheener!
I'll try and work it into a more general question, I'll get on that the now...

I dont use the DVD player. Just the VCR. Anything made after 1998 irritates me, pretty much.
