I want to start a war here lol. Here's my argument:
People have different perceptions of true love. The only thing common in all of these perceptions are that they want to stay with the person. However, you would also want to stay with your friends, so 'love' would be wanting to stay with that person more than your friends. (Going off topic: Wouldn't love actually wreck your friendships in that case? No thank you, I value my friends) Because love is 'abstract', as in that it is a feeling, it doesn't exist till that person feels it. But true love and love are basically the same thing, with true love being stronger than love, if it even exists, which I'll pretend it does till later.

Now, some people think of 'true love' as obsession - when they 'truly' love someone, they think about them every minute, etc. Eventually this will lead to the other person to think of them as being too clingy and push them away. If that is true love, I fear for humanity's survival.

Others think of it as being with the person everyday, growing old together, etc. But being with the person everyday would make the novelty of being with the person not feel special. For example, if you eat the same food every day (Ahem, let's not talk about Big Nate's Cheez Doodle record or Ophie's poptart record - ergh) you'll get sick of it. Same with this. You see someone everyday, you get sick of it.

Yet others think of it as doing whatever they can to support the other person. To devote themselves to the other person. Well, this... you're literally saying "I have no life, the only purpose of my life is to help said person, I cannot live my own life". Like, seriously? SERIOUSLY? Have a life, people.

I've actually put some more thought into this after the discussion last night.
You can love someone and even marry that person and make things work, but sometimes people find that ONE person who was really meant FOR them. I think we all have a specific person who is meant for us and when we find that person we just know it almost immediately. I believe that is what is called "True Love".
If that doesn't make sense then I'll explain by giving an example.
I met who I believe to be my True Love in high school and we've been best friends for 5 years. Sure we've had some arguments and have even split up for a while, but I always find myself coming back to him because I just get that feeling that I'm supposed to be with him. The last guy I was with was seriously considering getting married and in talking to him about it he made the comment of "well I think we could make things work... maybe we're not perfect for each other but we can try." and I thought "but you shouldn't have to work to love someone, love should just be there if you're going to be married to this person right?" And again, I found myself circling back to my best friend.
For me True Love is finding someone who you deeply care for no matter what happens and even when you get upset or angry with that person, you can never stay angry with them.
Until you experience this emotion for yourself, you may or may not believe that True Love exists, but if you refuse to believe that it exists, you'll most likely never find it because you won't be looking for it and even if you did find it, you wouldn't know it.

That is how a marriage is supposed to be, that is how love should be.
Devoting yourself to someone else doesn't make you weak or pathetic, it makes you a better person and when both people are devoted to each other it makes them stronger as a couple. If you're going to be with someone then you should be devoted to them, that doesn't mean you have to give up living your own life it simply means that you are no longer an "I", but a "WE" and you have someone else to care for in life.
Your approach to this subject is completely selfish, and love is not selfish, its no wonder you don't believe in True Love.

Okay, lemme say something, this is a place called SERIOUS DISCUSSION. Which, in other words, mean that we're supposed to criticise each other's views. Discussing is criticising each other's views. Like, discussing things make you understand the topic more. I'm trying to do that here. Thanks.

How am I being ridiculous? I'm just pointing out that with no objective, devotion is basically useless. Therefore, being devoted to each other being true love is moot unless there's an objective, unless you want to start calling true love useless, though I don't want to. Also, for the objective point, I mean an actual accomplishable objective. Having an infinite loop with the objective being devotion doesn't work.

Also, Serious Discussion = being serious. Being mature is not being a sore loser, taking responsibility for your actions, essentially not being childish. Am I being childish or ridiculous?

(Okay, the Pokemon part was kinda ridiculous, but that was the only thing I could think of. Why don't I give another example:

Two friends walked into a bar. They drank a lot of alcoholic drinks, and got drunk. They then left in a car, and crashed soon after into another car and died.

The devotion would be the act of drinking the alcoholic drinks, and the act of NOT being devoted would be not drinking. I'll give an example of something that happened irl to one of my dad's friends if you want. Dunno if that's true love or not, but if it was, well, I wouldn't ever want to marry >.>)

True Love is finding that one person that you were meant to be with.
There are many people you could end up with, but there is someone out there who was put on this earth specifically FOR you. At least, that's what I believe, because that's what I've come to find. Every guy (other than Alan) who I have dated hasn't smatched up to Alan and I don't believe in coincidences so that MUST mean that he is my "True Love".
Also, LOVE itself is not two people aimlessly serving each other for the rest of their lives (or Eternity in my case). It's two people working together as a team to make a marriage work. You can NOT have an effective marriage without love because without love there is no understanding and without understanding you can't work things out for the better of both of you. Marriage is about two people who can work together as a team to effectively raise a family.
Life isn't a fairy tale, but that doesn't mean that True Love doesn't exist.
