The dismal economy will also have sparked it.

Basically many north African and Middle eastern countries are ruled by dictatorships. With the global economic crisis inequality is made more visible, and with greater communication amongst the people they can coordinate action quickly and more efficiently.

I suppose what is in the Egyptian Government's favour is they haven't yet open fired with live ammunition. Some dictatorships would not think twice about such an action.

But best of luck to all those protesting in the Middle east and north Africa.

I think we can safely say that something did actually happen.
and is spreading amongst the countries in that region.

I don't know about freedom, as the military is in power right now. They just dissolved the parliament btw, which could be seen as a step in either direction. I sure hope the transition is peaceful.
