The saddest character death for me so far was...
*major spoiler up ahead for game of thrones etc*

Robb Stark's death on the third installment in the game of thrones series.
I just found the way he died absolutely horrible (and the afternath was somewhat brutal), since i much liked the character.

Runner up: Rorschach's death on the Watchmen comic. It was my #1, since he died because he thought the truth wasn't meant to be kept secret, no matter the consequences (which in this case, were nuclear war).

John Marston's death was the saddest for me. In reality, all John Marston wanted to do was be with his family. That's what the game was about. John attempting to curry the government's favour to release his family --whom they had taken captive-- by killing the bandits of Southern Arizona, and Northern Mexico, most who he used to run with as a kid.

See I didn't find his death too sad. Rowling wrote the character so that you hated him before he died. Honestly I don't think she hit hard enough to home. In a press release before the seventh book came out she said she was going to attack the people closest to Harry because "that's what the bad guys do." But at that point there was nobody really left and she couldn't kill Ron and Hermione. Honestly the whole thing was just a very bad self-insert fanfic.
