First of all, this wasn't the end of the WORLD. It was the end of the 5th AGE, which meant that there had been 4 before this, and we're still existing and all. The world never actually ended.
Second of all, the Mayans don't run around in circles screaming about the end of the world. Instead, they throw a big feast. They view it as a happy occasion.
Third of all, why would the world suddenly end, and how would the Mayans know exactly when?
Also, even though leap years are not factored in, that doesn't actually matter because the date is set not bye looking a certain amount of days forwards, but instead by counting the YEARS. The transition between ages is supposed to be on a certain winter solstice. That's why it's on December 21st.

I'm just saying that anyone who believes that the world will end is grossly uninformed. NOTE: I am NOT trying to insult someone with that last statement. I am just trying to tell everyone the relevant facts so they WON'T be uninformed (because these are not exactly well known facts).

-sigh- The world is not going to end, as Pie pointed out, it's only the end of the 5th world age(I believe it's the 5th). The Mayans thought of time as a giant circle, not just 1 infinitely long line, so they believe everything cycled. The reason the Mayan calender ends on 12/21/12 is due to the fact that on their calender, the date is 13.0.0.0.0 (a.k.a 0.0.0.0.0).
The Mayans did not believe that this date was the end of the world, it was just the end date of 1 world age. From what I have researched myself, in this transition from the 5th world age to the 6th, but just because it's not the actual end of the world doesn't mean this will be easy.
What has been foretold is that this world age will end in earthquakes (from the limited amounts of research that is what I have found, still need to actually verify this little bit) and that we can either destroy ourselves from the transition of the 5th world age over to 6th or we can advance peacefully and, as a species, "spiritually and mentally evolve".
Finally, despite what you most hopefully wish/believe, the Mayans DID know about leap year.They were amazing at astronomy, they were considered one of the most/more advanced ancient civilization in this field. What they understood was that each year was 365.246 days. And that everything repeated in a cycle. On a final note. their calenders were so advanced that the only calenders that can actually compete with theirs is modern science calenders.

Sorry for going a bit off trailing into some unneeded information but some part of me felt it was best to divulge that information to you.

Anyway! I read an article from from psycho guy on the web the other day, it said if at least 2 more natural disasters strike, it's a definite that the world will end in ruins.
But I guess you can't predict the end of the world. Theoretically impossible. That's like me predicting FWG Leader will wake up female tomorrow morning. .. Scratch that. XD

Then again, kind of skeptical. If there's no such thing as the end of the world, why in the hell did everyone freak and start talking about it in the first place? Wrong move. You cant say "Oh my gosh! It's just been discovered that the mayans predicted the end of the world 2012. Hide your kids hide your wife" & then go back and say "Oops. False information" ..They should have just not opened their mouths to start with.
I guess it doesn't help that we as American's cant mind our own business when it comes to other country's problems.. like that thing that's going on Israel. Bombing and such. We should have nothing to do with that. This is why I fear another war. This time much more powerful, and theyre just gonna start dropping bombs on us and we will die. Eventually. But as lamb said, we're still all going to die. Whether we want to or not. Just be blessed you're still where you are standing today. You face 1000 ways to die every ..single.. day

I kind of feel they just said that so we wont freak out as bad. Let me tell you, I'll be skipping school that day and hiding in the basement just in case.
My friend Lizzy & I think it would be a funny prank though if electric/cable companys shut off all lights and junk for like 10 minutes just to freak people out.

And, technically, we all know when the World is going to end. Our World, the Earth. As you know, Earth used to be a super hot planet, and it spun incredibly fast, making the days only 3 hours long. Over time until now, the core cooled down, and so did the mantle and other earth-layers, making the planet spin slower, to what we know is now 24 hours a day.


Over time, the core will eventually cool down to a complete stop. When this happens, our electro-magnetic field will break down over months, or years. This protected us from the solar flares, and without it, the sunlight from the Sun intensifies just a bit. So, once the core stops, the planet's vegetation will slowly be burnt away, and we'll be bombarded with numerous asteroids(Before they burnt up in our atmosphere)

So, once our core stops, live on Earth will slowly die away, and we'll end up like our Moon, who's core has stopped, and because we know it's core has stopped, we have believed that it once had life, or some kind of vegetation, or water.

Mars is another example of a planet who lost it's electro-magnetic field due to it's core stopping, probably being blasted away from solar flares and asteroids, or whatever(look into this yourself ) and right now, Mars has some atmosphere left i believe, and Earth would be in a state like that before the whole field collapses.
