well technically it is offensive to christians considering the original phrase is, "damn you to hell!" which means may god send you to hell bc ur an evil person and it's a pretty big insult to religious christians it's like the biggest insult u can give someone in catholicism or any other sect.

now we just shortned it to god damnit as in god damn it like u dehumanize the person by not even respecting their gender.
